Acid Reflux

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is commonly caused by dysfunction of the lower oesophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the oesophagus.

Contributing factors and root causes may include excess stomach pressure, obesity, poor dietary habits, delayed stomach emptying, hiatal hernia, pregnancy, smoking, alcohol consumption, stress, certain medications, and food triggers such as caffeine, spicy foods, fatty meals, and carbonated drinks.

In some individuals, underlying digestive dysfunction, inflammation, or lifestyle factors may also contribute to symptom development and severity.

How Nutritional Therapy Can Support Acid Reflux

  • Assessment of digestive health, diet, lifestyle, and symptom patterns.

  • Identification of potential food triggers and sensitivities contributing to reflux.

  • Evaluation of gut health, digestion, and possible microbial imbalances.

  • Investigation of stress, sleep, and lifestyle factors impacting digestive function.

  • Review of contributing factors such as meal timing, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and medications.

  • Functional testing where appropriate, including digestive and nutritional assessments.

  • Development of an individualised naturopathic diet and lifestyle plan to address underlying contributors and support digestive health.
